If you've been struggling with missing teeth, you might wonder how dental implants could change your smile and restore confidence. At Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we believe that dental implants are more than just a solution for missing teeth — they can significantly enhance your overall quality of life. Read on to learn how these innovative dental solutions can transform not only the look and function of your mouth but also your self-esteem and well-being. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact our office in Memphis, Arlington, or Tipton, TN.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are advanced dental devices designed to replace missing teeth by serving as artificial roots that are surgically embedded into the jawbone. Typically made from biocompatible materials like titanium, these implants provide a stable foundation for various types of replacement teeth, including crowns, bridges, or dentures. Unlike traditional dentures, which may slip or shift, dental implants are securely anchored, allowing for a natural look and feel. This not only restores function — enabling patients to eat, speak, and smile with confidence — but also helps preserve the jawbone and maintain facial structure.

Who can have dental implants?

Most adults with healthy gums and sufficient bone structure in their jaw are good candidates for dental implants. If you've lost one or more teeth due to injury, decay, or other reasons and maintain overall good health, dental implants might be an ideal solution. However, certain conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, or significant bone loss may affect implant success. In such cases, additional treatments like bone grafts might be necessary. After a consultation at one of our locations, we can help determine if dental implants are right for you.

What are the different types of dental implants?

Dental implants come in several types, tailored to meet individual needs. The most common types include:

  • Single-tooth implants: Ideal for replacing one missing tooth, these implants look and function like natural teeth
  • Multiple-tooth implants: For those needing several replacements, multiple implants can support a bridge, providing a stable and aesthetically pleasing solution
  • All-on-Four® implants: This advanced option allows a complete arch of teeth to be secured using only four strategically placed implants, making it an excellent choice for patients seeking a full dental restoration

Each type offers unique benefits, and our team can help determine the fit for you.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

One of the most common questions is, "Do dental implants change your smile?" The simple answer is "yes!" Dental implants in Memphis can change your smile by providing a natural-looking, long-term solution that restores both the appearance and function of missing teeth, allowing you to smile with confidence.

An additional question we get asked is, "Can dental implants restore face shape?" Again, the answer is "yes." Missing teeth can lead to bone loss in the jaw, which can cause the face to sag and appear older. By securing implants into the jawbone, we stimulate bone growth and help maintain facial structure.

Dental implants provide a convenient, long-lasting solution for restoring both function and appearance of the mouth.

How can dental implants improve overall quality of life?

The advantages of dental implants extend beyond aesthetics and function. They can profoundly affect physical and mental well-being. Improved oral function can lead to better nutrition, as you can eat a wider variety of foods. Additionally, the confidence boost from a restored smile can enhance your social interactions and relationships. Moreover, the psychological benefits of dental implants are significant. Patients often report feeling happier and more engaged in life after their implants are placed, as they can freely smile and communicate without feeling self-conscious about their teeth.

I was generally concerned about my the tooth extraction but it went well. Dr Sexton was very calm, considerate, and re-assuring through out the procedure. I had local anaesthesia to numb the area and I did not feel anything during the surgery. It was smooth and quick including a few stitches. Instructions for after care were shared verbally as well as on paper to take home with me, as well as a prescription to pick up from my local pharmacy. Overall it was a great experience and if I need to get any other extractions I know I am in safe hands. And the icing on the cake was the after hours check up call. I had my surgery at about 1pm and Doctor Sexton called me at 7pm to check up on me.All was well, even after the anaesthesia wore off I didn’t need and pain meds!! 48 hours later no swelling or pain. Thank you Doctor Sexton and team for a great patient experience!!
