Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a cutting-edge treatment used in dental care to promote faster healing and improve outcomes after oral surgery. At Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Drs. Sexton, Weiskopf, and Russ utilize PRF in procedures such as tooth extractions, dental implant placements, and bone grafting. PRF is derived from the patient's own blood and contains a high concentration of growth factors that enhance tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the healing process. By incorporating PRF into their treatments, our team can provide our patients with an enhanced experience, quicker recovery times, and more successful surgical outcomes. For more information on PRF, contact our practice in Memphis, TN.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) works by harnessing the natural healing properties of the patient's own blood to enhance recovery after dental procedures. During your dental procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn and processed to concentrate platelets and fibrin, which are rich in growth factors. This PRF is then applied to the surgical site, where it promotes tissue regeneration, reduces inflammation, and accelerates the healing process.

What to Expect After Platelet-Rich Fibrin

After an oral treatment that includes PRF, you may notice mild swelling, slight tenderness, or minimal bleeding near the surgical site, which typically subsides within a few days. Because PRF is created from your own blood, the risk of reaction or complication is extremely low. Most patients find that healing feels faster and more comfortable compared to traditional recovery. You can usually return to light activities the same day, though strenuous exercise or hot foods should be avoided for 24 hours. As the PRF matrix gradually releases growth factors, it supports healthy tissue repair, bone integration, and smoother recovery following extractions, grafts, or implant procedures.

PRF offers several benefits that enhance healing and improve outcomes in dental procedures, including:

  • Accelerates tissue regeneration and healing
  • Reduces inflammation at the surgical site
  • Improves the success rate of procedures like implants and grafts
  • Uses the patient's own blood, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions
  • Enhances overall recovery time and comfort

How is platelet-rich fibrin different from platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

While both platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) use the patient’s own blood to enhance healing, PRF contains a higher concentration of platelets and growth factors and does not require the use of anticoagulants. Unlike PRP, PRF forms a natural fibrin matrix, allowing for a slow and sustained release of healing factors over time, which can further support tissue regeneration and recovery.

Can platelet-rich fibrin reduce the risk of complications after oral surgery?

Yes, PRF can help lower the risk of complications such as infection, dry socket, and poor wound healing by promoting faster tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation. The natural healing properties of PRF enhance the body’s ability to repair itself, which can be especially beneficial after procedures like tooth extractions, dental implants, and bone grafting.

Is platelet-rich fibrin safe for everyone?

Yes, PRF is considered extremely safe since it is derived from the patient’s own blood, eliminating the risk of allergic reactions or disease transmission. However, patients with certain blood disorders or underlying health conditions may need to consult their oral surgeon to determine if PRF is suitable for them.

If you're looking to enhance your recovery after dental procedures, consider the benefits of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). At Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Drs. Sexton, Weiskopf, and Russ use PRF to accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and improve the success of surgeries like extractions and dental implants. By using your own blood to promote natural tissue regeneration, PRF offers a safe and effective way to ensure a smoother recovery.
