How Does Oral Pathology Work?
Oral pathology works by identifying and diagnosing diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, and surrounding structures through a combination of clinical examination, diagnostic tests, and tissue analysis. Initially, we will perform a thorough evaluation of your oral health, which may include visual inspections, palpations, and medical history reviews. Suspicious lesions or abnormalities are often further investigated using diagnostic tools such as biopsies, imaging studies, and laboratory tests. Tissue samples from biopsies are examined microscopically to determine the nature of the condition, whether it is benign or malignant. Based on the findings, we can develop and recommend appropriate treatment plans to address the identified issues and improve the patient's oral health.
What to Expect After an Oral Pathology Exam
After an oral pathology exam or biopsy, it’s normal to experience mild tenderness, swelling, or slight bleeding at the sample site for a day or two. These effects are temporary and can be managed with gentle rinsing and over-the-counter pain relief if necessary. Stitches, if placed, will either dissolve on their own or be removed at a short follow-up visit. Most patients resume regular eating and oral hygiene within a day, taking care to avoid the area until it heals. Once the biopsy results are back, we will review them with you in detail and outline any next steps for follow-up, treatment, or care as needed.

Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Reviews
I had a very positive experience at Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Center. The staff was professional, caring, and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. The doctors explained everything clearly and answered all of my questions with patience; I also received a call from their office to see how I was doing. The procedure went smoothly, and the care I received afterward was excellent. I truly appreciated how kind and attentive everyone was during my recovery process. I would definitely recommend this office to anyone needing oral surgery care.
Highly recommend!!The entire staff was pleasant and professional. I saw Dr. Weiskopf, very pleasant and great chairside manner. He was very thorough with my examination, and explaining my surgery process. He was patient and took time to address my questions and concerns. My wisdom tooth extraction experience was incredible and how many times have you heard anyone say that about having teeth extracted!? Dr. Weiskopf, and his team was amazing! They communicated about everything they were doing, kept conversation with me, which helped with nerves. I had no pain at all! I only had to take 2 motrins because of soreness. Dr. Weiskopf even called me personally later that evening to see how I was doing!I went back for my post operation appointment and still the same amazing experience from everyone in the office!I would give more than 5 stars if it was available.
Everyone was very nice and professional.
My first visit was amazing...beautiful office space, friendly staff, wait time was an appropriate length.
The nurses and Dr. Weiskopf were very friendly and made me feel comfortable. As someone with a severe fear of Doctors, the gave me pre-op medication to help calm me down and talked me through every process. Not once did I feel nervous. Very thorough instructions were given to me and a day later I'm in no pain.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are common signs of oral pathology?
Symptoms of oral pathology can vary but may include persistent sores, red or white patches, swelling, unexplained pain, or difficulty swallowing. Any unusual lumps, ulcers, or chronic irritation that do not heal within two weeks should be evaluated by a specialist. Early detection is key to ensuring effective treatment and preventing complications.
How are oral lesions diagnosed?
Oral lesions are diagnosed through clinical examination, imaging tests, and biopsy procedures. During an evaluation, the oral surgeon will assess the affected area, possibly using x-rays or advanced imaging to gather more information. If necessary, a biopsy will be performed and analyzed under a microscope to determine if the lesion is benign, precancerous, or malignant.
Can oral pathology detect oral cancer?
Yes, oral pathology plays a crucial role in detecting oral cancer. Suspicious growths, sores, or tissue abnormalities can be examined through biopsies and laboratory testing to determine if cancer is present. Early diagnosis is critical, as it allows for prompt treatment and better outcomes. Regular dental check-ups and professional evaluations help with early detection and prevention.
