Why Are Oral Exams Important?
Keeping up with annual oral examinations allows you to take an active position to preserve the wellness of your smile. A standard dental exam at Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery looks for dental decay, gum disease, cancer of the mouth, and different problems that could be impacting your dental and total health. Often offered during regular dental cleaning appointments, oral exams let Drs. Sexton, Weiskopf, and Russ examine the teeth, gums, bite, temporomandibular joints, and other oral features to ensure early identification and treatment of dental issues. If you want to preserve the wellness and appearance of your mouth, schedule a routine dental exam at our Memphis, TN practice!
What Can I Expect During an Oral Exam?
Dental exams at our Memphis, TN office start off with a review of your medical history. We might also ask about any dental concerns you have to discover more about your total dental wellness. During certain yearly appointments, a series of advanced x-rays might be taken to give Drs. Sexton and Weiskopf enhanced insight into the health of your teeth and jawbone. A screening for oral cancer will be performed, as well as an evaluation of the alignment of your bite and jaws. Your teeth will be assessed for decay, as well as the condition of any dental appliances. A gum assessment may also be performed to detect possible signs of periodontal disease.

Dr. Sexton and his staff was absolutely wonderful to me. They listened to every concern I had. He helped me make good decisions on what was the best treatment for my dental care. Thank you Dr. Sexton!
I had a wonderful experience navigating through the process of having my oral surgery with Sexton & Weiskopf. From the office personnel to the assistants and especially Dr. Weiskopf, everyone was nice, pleasant and professional. They were patient and explained everything that would and needed to be done. They made me feel relaxed despite the normal anxiety that I have when visiting the dentist. The most impressive part was receiving a personal telephone call from Dr. Weiskopf later that evening at home after the procedure. It is rare to get that type of gesture in today's medical arena. Kudos to Dr. Weiskopf and his amazing staff! I would definitely and highly recommend him to anyone needing dental care!

Who Should Get Dental Exams?
Regular dental checkups are an essential part of maintaining oral health for patients of all ages in Memphis, TN. It’s recommended that everyone have a dental exam at least once a year for preventive care, although exams may be necessary more often for concerns like pain or injury. Gum disease and tooth decay often progress without obvious symptoms, making early detection crucial for more conservative treatment.
Here’s why annual dental exams are so important:
- Catch oral issues early before they develop into more complex problems, like advanced decay or gum disease.
- Minimize the need for invasive treatments by treating concerns at their earliest stages.
- Promote lifelong dental health for kids by monitoring issues like thumb-sucking or teething and setting the foundation for good oral hygiene.
- Support your overall well-being by addressing dental health as part of your whole-body wellness.
For children, the ADA (American Dental Association) recommends that their first dental visit happens before their first birthday to establish healthy habits and care for growing smiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have an oral exam?
It’s generally recommended to have an oral exam at least once a year to help maintain your dental and overall health. Routine exams allow Drs. Sexton, Weiskopf, or Russ to catch potential issues, like tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer, early, often before symptoms appear.
What does the dentist check during an oral exam?
During an oral exam, our team will review your medical history and ask about any dental concerns. The exam typically includes digital x-rays, an evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw, and a screening for oral cancer. We may also assess any restorations and check for signs of periodontal disease.
What are the advantages of getting regular oral exams?
Regular exams support better oral hygiene, fresher breath, and early detection of problems that could lead to tooth loss. They also give you a chance to ask questions, receive personalized care tips, and preserve the long-term health and appearance of your smile.
Will I need X-rays during my exam?
During some annual appointments, a series of advanced X-rays may be taken to give us a detailed view of your teeth and jawbone. These images are crucial for detecting issues that aren't visible during a standard visual inspection, such as decay between teeth or problems below the gumline. Our team will determine if X-rays are necessary based on your individual health needs.
Are dental exams painful?
Routine dental exams are typically painless and non-invasive. You might feel slight pressure as we examine your teeth and gums, but you should not experience any discomfort. If you have sensitive teeth or feel anxious, please let our team know so we can make your visit as comfortable as possible.
How can I prepare for my dental exam?
To prepare, simply come ready to discuss your medical history and any dental concerns you may have. Be sure to maintain your regular oral hygiene routine by brushing and flossing before your appointment. If you have dental insurance, bringing your information with you will help our staff streamline the process.
Does Insurance Cover Oral Exams?
Insurance coverage for oral exams often depends on your specific plan. Many dental insurance providers cover routine exams and cleanings as part of preventive care, typically once or twice a year. For additional exams due to issues like pain, injury, or gum disease, coverage may vary. Our team at Sexton Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery can help you understand your benefits and work with you to ensure you’re maximizing your coverage.
