Wisdom teeth, the set of molars at the back of your mouth, can cause various issues if they don't come in properly. Common signs that you may need a wisdom tooth extraction include persistent pain, swelling, or tenderness in the back of the mouth, difficulty chewing, and frequent infections near the gums. You might also notice crowding of other teeth, bad breath, or even jaw stiffness.

At Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, a consultation can help determine whether removing wisdom teeth is necessary to alleviate these symptoms and prevent future complications in Tipton or Arlington, TN. Early recognition of these signs is key to protecting your oral health and comfort. If you think you may need a wisdom tooth extraction, contact us in Memphis, TN to schedule a consultation.

What are the signs of wisdom tooth pain?

One of the most noticeable indications that you might need a wisdom tooth extraction is persistent or worsening pain. Wisdom tooth pain often starts as an ache in the back of the mouth where these molars are located and may extend to the jaw, ear, or neck. This discomfort is typically caused by inflammation, infection, or pressure from the growing tooth. If you experience swelling, redness, or tenderness in this area, it's a sign that your wisdom teeth may not be erupting properly and require professional attention. Pain while chewing or difficulty opening your mouth could also signal that wisdom teeth are causing problems that need to be addressed.

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth occurs when a tooth is blocked from fully erupting due to lack of space or improper alignment. This condition is common and can lead to significant complications if left untreated. Impacted teeth may press against neighboring teeth, causing pain, infection, or damage to the surrounding structure. In some cases, cysts or tumors may form around the impacted tooth, further compromising oral health. Consulting with an oral surgeon in Memphis, TN ensures early detection and effective management of impacted wisdom teeth. Prompt treatment can also prevent misalignment of other teeth, preserving a smile's alignment and health.

What issues arise with an erupted wisdom tooth?

An erupted wisdom tooth may still cause problems, even if it has fully emerged through the gumline. Because these teeth are difficult to reach, they are prone to decay and gum disease due to improper cleaning. Food particles and bacteria can easily accumulate, leading to infections or cavities. An improperly erupted wisdom tooth may grow at an angle, causing irritation to nearby tissues or crowding other teeth. Regular check-ups can help monitor these teeth and determine if extraction is the option to avoid complications. By addressing issues early, you can maintain better oral hygiene and reduce future dental concerns in Tipton or Arlington, TN.

It was my first time visiting the office of Sexton and Weiskopf. However they treated me like I'd been going there for years! Dr. Matthew Russ and his team were very professional from the initial visit through my post-op care. It was the best decision I've ever made involving emergency care for my teeth. If you need an oral surgeon look no further. This is the only place you should go!

This is the place to use! I had oral surgery 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be more pleased. While the initial consultation wait was a little long, the office staff were very friendly and helpful. Dr. Sexton explained everything before the surgery, answered my questions and kept my husband informed before and after the surgery. I had absolutely no pain and very little swelling from the surgery, although he did tell me that doesn't always happen. If you need a good, professional, and caring oral surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Sexton!

I had a molar removed yesterday and prepped for an implant on a future date. From the consultation through the procedure yesterday everything went extremely well. I didn’t even have any pain and went to work today. Dr. Weiskopf even called me last night to see how I was doing. I couldn’t recommend him enough.

Went in for an implant some years back and recently went in for a wisdom tooth extraction. Saw Dr. Weiskopf both times and both were a great experience. He’s so very kind, listens to you, and has a good sense of humor. Good office staff as well.
