How long is recovery from wisdom tooth removal?

So, how long is recovery from wisdom tooth removal? Most people recover in 1 – 2 weeks, though the timeline varies depending on the complexity of the procedure. Simple extractions heal faster, while impacted teeth may take a bit longer. Below is what you can expect on a day-by-day basis.

Day 1: Rest and bleeding control

The first 24 hours are the most critical for healing after oral surgery. You'll likely feel groggy from sedation and experience some bleeding and swelling. Bite down gently on gauze to help blood clots form in the extraction sites.

Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or using a straw, as these can dislodge the blood clot. Stick to soft foods, keep your head elevated, and apply ice packs to your cheeks in 20-minute intervals. Take any prescribed medications as directed.

Days 2 and 3: Peak swelling and discomfort

Wisdom tooth pain typically peaks around the second or third day. This is normal and expected. Continue applying ice and taking pain medication as needed. Warm compresses can help after the first 48 hours if swelling persists.

Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup. Avoid hot foods and drinks, which can irritate the extraction sites. Rinse gently with salt water after meals to keep the area clean.

Days 4 and 5: Gradual improvement

By day four or five, your normal energy levels will start to return, and eating becomes more comfortable. You can introduce firmer foods, but continue avoiding anything hard, crunchy, or chewy. Keep the extraction sites clean and continue rinsing with salt water. If you were prescribed antibiotics, make sure to complete the full course even if you're feeling better.

Days 6, 7, and beyond: Nearly back to normal

Most patients feel close to normal by the end of the first week. Swelling should be minimal, and any lingering wisdom tooth pain should be largely resolved. You may still notice some tenderness, but this is normal as the tissue continues to heal.

By the second week, you can gradually reintroduce a normal diet. Attend all follow-up appointments at Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery so we can address any concerns.

Recognizing and reporting dry socket

Dry socket is one of the most common complications after wisdom tooth extraction. If the blood clot at the site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the area has healed, you may experience intense pain, a bad taste or odor in the mouth, or visible bone in the area. If you suspect dry socket, contact our team in Memphis, Arlington, and Tipton right away. Treatment involves cleaning the socket and placing a dressing to relieve pain and promote natural healing.

I had a very positive experience at Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Center. The staff was professional, caring, and made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. The doctors explained everything clearly and answered all of my questions with patience; I also received a call from their office to see how I was doing. The procedure went smoothly, and the care I received afterward was excellent. I truly appreciated how kind and attentive everyone was during my recovery process. I would definitely recommend this office to anyone needing oral surgery care.

Highly recommend!!The entire staff was pleasant and professional. I saw Dr. Weiskopf, very pleasant and great chairside manner. He was very thorough with my examination, and explaining my surgery process. He was patient and took time to address my questions and concerns. My wisdom tooth extraction experience was incredible and how many times have you heard anyone say that about having teeth extracted!? Dr. Weiskopf, and his team was amazing! They communicated about everything they were doing, kept conversation with me, which helped with nerves. I had no pain at all! I only had to take 2 motrins because of soreness. Dr. Weiskopf even called me personally later that evening to see how I was doing!I went back for my post operation appointment and still the same amazing experience from everyone in the office!I would give more than 5 stars if it was available.

The nurses and Dr. Weiskopf were very friendly and made me feel comfortable. As someone with a severe fear of Doctors, the gave me pre-op medication to help calm me down and talked me through every process. Not once did I feel nervous. Very thorough instructions were given to me and a day later I'm in no pain.
