The team at Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery understands the unique challenges that special needs patients face in maintaining optimal oral health. Dental visits can be particularly stressful for individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional conditions, leading to heightened anxiety and avoidance of dental care. Sedation dentistry offers a compassionate and effective solution by helping patients feel at ease throughout their treatment.

When anxiety and sensory sensitivity are managed, patients are more likely to follow through with regular dental care. This improves long-term oral health and helps prevent more serious dental issues down the road. With the help of sedation, dental appointments in Memphis, TN can become a more positive experience for patients and caregivers.

What are the types of dental sedation available?

We offer several types of dental sedation to match the specific needs and comfort levels of each patient. These options include oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, all administered by trained professionals. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment to induce a calm, relaxed state, ideal for patients who need help managing mild to moderate dental anxiety. IV sedation, on the other hand, is administered directly into the bloodstream and provides a deeper level of sedation, perfect for longer or more complex procedures.

General anesthesia is often reserved for patients who may require unconsciousness, such as those with severe medical or behavioral challenges. The variety of options ensures that each patient receives the right level of care in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

How does sedation dentistry benefit special needs patients?

Sedation dentistry is especially valuable for special needs patients who may struggle with traditional dental settings. By reducing anxiety and increasing tolerance for treatment, it allows patients to receive more comprehensive care in fewer visits. This is particularly helpful for patients who have difficulty remaining still, are highly sensitive to sensory stimuli, or have a history of traumatic dental experiences. Sedation can also help minimize the physical and emotional stress that caregivers often feel when trying to prepare a special needs child or adult for dental care. It empowers families to prioritize oral health without the fear or resistance that might otherwise come with each appointment. Ultimately, sedation helps make routine and advanced dental procedures accessible for everyone.

Is sedation dentistry safe for special needs patients?

Safety is our top priority when providing any form of dental sedation, and we take extra precautions for special needs patients. Before any treatment, our team conducts a thorough health assessment and reviews the patient's medical history in detail. This ensures we recommend the most appropriate form of sedation possible based on individual health and behavioral needs.

During the procedure, we closely monitor vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure to maintain a safe and controlled environment. Our oral surgeons in Memphis, Arlington, and Tipton, TN have extensive training in the administration of IV sedation and general anesthesia, and are equipped to handle situations that may arise. Parents and caregivers can rest assured knowing their loved one is in compassionate, capable hands.

I had a very pleasant experience with this Highly Professional team! They exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing oral surgery. Dr. Russ was very thorough during the consult visit and has outstanding patience and “chair-side” manner. The office staff was very friendly and accommodating. Everything from the digital new patient registration, text messaging, return calls, scheduling of appointments, to office environment SCREAMS “you are a valued patient and we are here to meet or exceed your dental needs”. Speaking of exceeding expectations, Dr. Russ called me the evening of my surgery to check to see how I was doing! I am so happy for the referral to see this group!

Dr Sexton and all the staff I dealt with, several, were very knowledgeable and courteous. They answered all my questions, which is usually a lot, to my satisfaction which is not always an easy accomplishment. It has been a day after the procedure and no complications. Pain and bleeding are a lot less than I expected. I would like to rate them above 5 stars but that’s as high as the chart goes.
