When Is Bone Grafting Needed For Dental Implants?

Dental implants are one of the best solutions available if you need to replace missing teeth and improve your smile. However, not everyone is ready for implants. In some cases, a bone grafting procedure can provide a more stable foundation for the implant.
Bone grafting is recommended to rebuild or strengthen the jawbone in areas where it may have weakened or deteriorated over time due to tooth loss, periodontal disease, or trauma.
At Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, with offices in Memphis, Arlington, and Tipton, TN, we specialize in helping patients rebuild their smiles through advanced techniques like bone grafting. Read on to learn when this treatment may be necessary, what it involves, and how it can support your success.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting is used to strengthen areas of the jaw that have weakened or deteriorated due to jawbone loss. When one or more teeth are missing, the jawbone begins to shrink without the stimulation provided by chewing. Over time, this can result in insufficient bone density to support a dental restoration.
A bone graft involves building up the jawbone with additional bone material, which can come from different sources. Over time, it bonds with your natural bone in a process called osseointegration. This is what creates a strong base for dental implants.
What are the different bone graft types?
At Sexton & Weiskopf Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we offer several bone graft types to replace missing teeth with implants. During a consultation in Memphis, our team members will evaluate your situation and recommend one of the following:
- Autografts: Bone is taken from your body, often from the hip or chin. While this requires an additional surgical site, it offers the highest compatibility since the material is your own.
- Allografts: Bone is obtained from a donor. Since this method doesn't require a secondary surgical site, it's less invasive for patients.
- Xenografts: Bone material is sourced from animals, typically cows. Xenografts are widely used and highly effective for stimulating bone regeneration.
- Alloplasts: These are synthetic bone graft materials designed to mimic natural bone. They can be an excellent choice for patients looking for nonbiological options.
What is osseointegration?
We discussed this term previously, but what is osseointegration? It's the natural process through which the bone graft fuses with the existing jawbone. This step typically takes 3 – 6 months and can be critical to the success of your dental restoration. Once osseointegration is complete and the graft has fused, your jaw can be ready to support dental implants with a high chance of long-term success.
When is the right time for bone grafting?
During a consultation, our team can determine the right time for bone grafting based on your needs. We'll begin with a thorough evaluation, including imaging and a physical exam, to assess the amount of jawbone loss involved. From there, we can create a personalized treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcomes.
